Angles on San Francisco

Poetry, as I see it, is anything that uses words to create art. With this idea in mind, I have realized that it is as open and creative as any other form of art. As I write poetry, I pay attention to both big and small moments, vast landscapes and the tiny movements of leaves on a branch. My observations are drawn from all angles of the Bay Area, this beautiful place in which I grew up.
My entry includes three poems set in San Francisco. "Nuthatches" freezes a single moment in writing: the surges of emotion felt while hearing birds chirp amid the commotion of upsetting news. "The pumpkin left crooked on the front step" reimagines a pumpkin's ephemeral life in my neighborhood. "on a flight to Los Angels" is a swift documentation of the feelings that overcame me once while taking off in a plane from San Francisco airport.
Writing these poems was at once an adventure, an experiment, a challenge, and a new path through the streets and skies of the Bay Area.

From the age of 7, writing has sparked joy and creation in my life. From writing classes to poetry readings to library volunteering, I've discovered that immersing myself in artistic writing adds new colors to my life. I've also learned how to express, rather than repress, all parts of my identity.
