Newspaper, Acrylic Paints, Mod Podge, Paintbrush, Watercolor (to dye paper).

  • This piece depicts a painted chicken against a collage of vintage newspapers, blending contemporary portraiture with nostalgic ephemera. The contrast between the green-tinted cool-colored newspapers and the white and red warm-toned chicken further exemplifies this contrast. This piece’s process was very challenging, as I had never utilized methods like decoupage and hand-dyeing (newspapers). One specific problem I ran into was seamlessly layering on acrylic paints upon a textured and uneven canvas. Through careful and precise strokes, I was able to accomplish this, but the stress that there could be no mistakes, as the painted newspaper is difficult to restore, truly had an impact. Despite the rocky journey, the end result left me feeling not only proud but as if I had created something new and different, unlike anything I had done before.

  • Creativity, to me, is the ability to create something new. Creativity is turning a blank canvas into a masterpiece that reflects unique ideas, emotions, and perspectives, transforming the ordinary into extraordinary. Everyone is creative in their own way, expressing their individuality through the ways they solve problems and share ideas.
