Figure Stretching in Three Aspects

Nasreen S.

Charcoal and Graphite

  • This work utilizes ideas of cubism to depict the motion of a figure stretching. I chose charcoal as my primary medium to emphasize the softness of musculature, adding slight touches of graphite to support rigid lines. Working large in scale (33’’x 46’’) allowed me to use the full range of motion of my arm, to create large expressive strokes, animating the piece. Using dark, black tone mediums on white paper, I further dramatized the motion of the figure. The soft overlapping lines draw the viewer's gaze across the progression of the stretch, and are balanced with dark rigid lines to create a main focal point.

  • To me, creativity is the ability to generate new ideas and express them in ways which inspire and influence the world.
