Build-a-Body

  • This piece talks about the idea that people can choose the way they look by using different medications to supposedly make themselves skinny. I was inspired by the new Barbie movie that pink symbolizes what is perfect and feminine. I included an adjustable scale on the side to represent the idea that we can choose the way our bodies look. I made the hands pink to represent doll-like features. Dolls are something that is seen as beautiful and perfect, so by using the doll's hands the body is turning into someone who is "perfect". I wanted to create a piece that people, especially women, can resonate with. We as women are constantly held to specific stereotypes that tell us how we should look and act, and I wanted this piece to tell a story about these pressures that people face.

  • Creativity to me is a way to express myself without having to use any words. I use creativity everyday through my art, my clothing, makeup, and dance. Without creativity I wouldn't be myself.
