A Lantern Festival

Allison L.

Fiberglass Statue, Acrylic Paint, Acrylic Markers

  • In celebration of the Year of the Rabbit, this artwork serves as a tribute to the rich cultural heritage of Lunar New year celebrations. To create this artwork, I layered acrylic paint onto a fiberglass statue and enhanced the details using acrylic markers. Throughout the rabbit, there are various symbols and activities that embody the essence of the festival. The glowing lanterns, synonymous with good fortune, light up the back of the rabbit. Bursting fireworks and lively firecrackers illuminate the dark purple underpaint to drive away the evil spirits. Cultural foods like Tanghulu or Xiao Long Bao highlight the culinary delights consumed throughout this festival. Lastly, the rhythmic dance of the lion adds a dynamic and spirited element to the piece. This artwork was created to inspire individuals to embrace the spirit of the rabbit -- gentle, hopeful, and ready to leap into a prosperous future.

  • I believe that creativity is a conduit for conveying the depths of human feelings and experience. It can allow a person to express themselves in a way that words can't, create characters that have never been created before, and push the boundaries for what's possible.
