Youth and Teenhood

Genevieve Z.

  • This piece represents aspects of childhood receding as one enters teen-hood. The silver cup is a gift I received when I was born along with the stuffed bunny, which I've slept with almost every night since. The singing bowl is another aspect of my youth/childhood; when I was a baby, my dad used to put me in it and carry me around the house. In front of all of these objects from my youth are a face sculpture (signifying the development of my love for interior design) and a perfume bottle, a large staple of teenage girlhood. While these aspects of teen-hood are more prominent in my life right now, I haven't completely left my childhood behind (I'm still in it right now) which is why those objects are still depicted in the drawing. To create this piece, I first photographed all of my objects and then replicated it on paper with a pencil using a grid method.

  • When I'm unable to put my thoughts and feelings into words, I find that art not only offers and outlet for me to communicate those thoughts and feelings, but also helps me discover new things about myself.
