Worlds Apart

Cecilia Y.

  • “Worlds Apart” is a lyrical contemporary dance focused on the feeling of loneliness that creeps in when a person misses someone so desperately, and they are separated from their loved one by a distance so far it seems like they are a world away. The song is “Astronomy” by Conan Gray, and it was written about two friends who drifted apart and realized that they were no longer the same people they once were. I saw this song as an expression of the intense sense of isolation one feels when they are far away from the one they love, both physically and emotionally.

I tried to emphasize this feeling of loneliness when choreographing my dance, expressing the desperation of trying to reach one’s loved one despite the distance and the despair at the separation that prevents two people from connecting. I listened to the lyrics and tried to translate that to dance and movement, conveying loneliness and solitude through my motions. At the end of my choreography, I was able to portray these emotions with a story, of both people feeling the same exact loneliness, yet separated by miles and years of distance.

  • Creativity comes to each person in different forms. Personally, creativity manifests as snippets of small ideas that eventually come together like a puzzle to form a whole. Exploring my creativity everyday allows me to express emotions through diverse means, whether it be dance, writing, or art.
