Pieces of Her

The piece I selected to submit “Pieces of Her” came from a shoot I did late in 2022, on 35mm black and white film. As I've developed a common theme throughout my work, the need for a sense of relation has stuck with me, specifically from those with shared experiences. The title itself addresses an audience predominantly female identifying. “Pieces of Her” is a piece meant to convey a sense of sorrow within the loss of purity. The photograph depicts a girl dressed in white as the subject, holding pieces of a broken pomegranate. The pieces of the pomegranate symbolize the destruction of love and desire; rooting from the mythological use of pomegranates, as well as a destruction of self preservation. Throughout cultural and social standards white is seen as a symbol of purity or innocence. The contrast of innocence and destruction is what makes this piece conceptually opposing. “Pieces of Her” is meant to relate my experience to others who can see themselves in my work.

Photography allows me to express myself as who I am past, present, and future. Photography helped me reflect on who I've been and what has shaped me to be that way. In addition it encourages me to come to terms with my identity, allowing me to welcome the future optimistically.
