My Mom, My Hair and Me

Nevaeh C.

  • My hair has always been a sacred aspect of my culture and upbringing. African Americans fashioned their hair for more than just a style, but as a way to express yourself and boost your confidence. During my childhood, I transitioned to a protective style known as braids. Braids have been evolving since over 5000 years ago and became a form of art for black women like myself. My mom and I always get creative when braiding each other’s hair which allows us to bond and create our own history.

  • Expressing my creativity impacts my life because it’s gives me a opportunity to express myself and uplifts others around me. I’m able to be completely transparent in my artistry which unlocks new things I learn about myself. It also helps me mentally when I find myself in stressful situations.
