First Teacher

Renika G.

  • Dedicated to my first ever art teacher, my father.

My father, who never had the chance to learn piano as a child, but provided me with the opportunity and taught me my first notes on the instrument.

This piece portrays the connection between a child, her father, and music. Made almost exclusively with crayons, I hoped to capture the beautiful, rich hue of the instrument through the layering of individual colors. Though I didn’t start playing piano on the brown baby grand piano we have now (rather on a black electric keyboard from which we kept the black piano bench), I wanted to incorporate parts of both the past and present into this image as music is still something we bond over today.

  • Creativity is a way of expressing emotion without any barriers.
