The Reflection

Hailey C.

Watercolor, colored pencils

  • I, like many my age, sometimes struggle with my body image, and so I wanted to make that the focus of my artwork. It’s a self portrait in which I am sitting against my mirror, crying. I used dark, cool colors in this part of the artwork to convey the darker emotions that I’m feeling. My reflection is not mimicking my pose but looking outward, and she is holding my hand as if trying to comfort me. I used lighter and warmer colors for this part to show that she is doing much better and struggles less with her body. My artwork is called reflection both because my physical reflection is in it and also because it represents me reflecting back on hard times and trying to comfort myself and show that it’ll get better.

  • To me, creativity means my thoughts and ideas, and how I come up with them and express them. It is the ability to create outside of things that already exist in reality, with no limits. Creativity is what makes me an artist.
