The Melting Past

Theresa X.

Graphite, pen, colored pencil

  • This piece is about the extinction of the sabertooth tiger, an animal that lived during the ice age. As the ice age ended, the saber tooth tiger died off, which is reflected in my drawing, as an iceberg is melting in the background with the skeleton of a saber tooth tiger. Since the saber tooth tiger is drawn in a realistic and detailed style, I balanced the background with a surrealist approach to show the cause of extinction. I enjoyed coloring the skeleton the most because the skeleton brings the piece together and lets it pop out of the drawing. Although I struggled to get the proportions and lighting correct, I am proud of myself for retrying and finishing the piece with satisfactory results.

  • Creativity means combining art styles, experimenting, and using your surroundings and the internet as references. I enjoy looking at books, other people’s clothes, and other art pieces to find something I can use as inspiration for my pieces, and I also like to add surrealist aspects to my drawings.
