The Autonomy of a Woman

“Even pretending you aren’t catering to male fantasies is a male fantasy: pretending you’re unseen, pretending you have a life of your own, that you can wash your feet and comb your hair unconscious of the ever-present watcher peering through the keyhole, peering through the keyhole in your own head, if nowhere else. You are a woman with a man inside watching a woman.” —Margaret Atwood. This two-piece collection is based on Atwood’s examination of how the female experience is curated through a male lens, which creates a lack of autonomy within the body and mind. Inspired by Atwood, this collection centers around this idea through exploring my own experiences and the experiences of the women around me. Each of these pieces fit together not only within the context of a collection, but within the context of how I experience the world as a young woman.

Creativity comes from the primal desire to feel human. My need to write is no different than my need to eat, sleep, or breathe. Creativity is just as integral to my identity as a person as any physical trait I possess.
