Self-Portrait

Lulu M.

charcoal on paper

  • I made this piece as part of an assignment for my Drawing & Painting class. The assignment was to take a selfie at an awkward of yourself and to draw it in charcoal. Charcoal drawing does not come naturally for me, and I also find self-portraiture uncomfortable so I had to push my artistic boundaries with this piece. But the point of it being, most portraits, especially ones of ourselves, we try to make as perfect and presentable for the view of others. But for this piece going past society’s expectations or standards,I push myself forward creatively, by making a piece of myself from un unattractive or awkward angle.

  • For me, creativity is about showing up as your authentic self and finding that space where you can truly be you. From small drawings and collages and journals filled with pictures, and to the way I dress, making art has always been part of who I am.
