Kawaii fashion, a form of cultural and creative self expression, pertains to dressing in adorable attire, brightening up the world. ”Kawaii” originates from the Taisho Era term ”kawayushi” , to be embarassed/vulnerable. Later on, the definition shifted to meanings of lovable and childhood innocence. During the 1960s-1970s, Japanese schoolgirls began utilizing ”kawaii” in their handwritings, a rebellion against the strict school norms. Clothing brands also began hopping onto the kawaii craze, experimenting with cute and colorful styles. Kawaii played a huge part of Japanese culture, making its way into many lifestyles. Although kawaii culture was integrating more, it was still criticized and discriminated by those with traditional mindsets, who viewed kawaii fashion as being ”childish”, and it dealt with issues around cultural appropriation and sexualization. I wanted to reflect in my art on developments in kawaii culture and fashion, once a form of rebellion, and how many overcame expectations of conformity.

Creativity to me means being free to self expression and not letting societal norms influence my artistic decisions. As an Asian American, I receive constant exposure to media influenced by kawaii culture. As a creative individual, I have used ”kawaii” to express my creativity both in fashion and my artworks.
