Fifteen Velas

  • This self-portrait explores what it means to me to turn 15 as a Latina, reflecting on the traditional values that tie into what a quinceañera signifies in Mexican culture. Inspired by Cristina Troufa, I took inspiration from her artistic style of leaving some parts unfinished. Holding a cake with only the numbers depicts losing a vital tradition as I didn’t have a massive celebration as usual in my culture. The glow from the candles contrasting the dark background emphasizes the hard emotions felt. The banners also represent my dual identity as a Mexican-American, as one reads ”Feliz Cumpleaños” and the other ”Happy Birthday,” blending personal reflection with the wider cultural significance of this age.

  • Creativity allows me to view and approach situations and art pieces differently. It’s not only limited to an art classroom; it’s present everywhere. Doing art allows me to experiment with different mediums, choose the best fit for each piece I start, and learn to embrace challenges along the way.
