Break Myself

Sophia K.

  • “Break Myself” was inspired by Bebe Rexha and ITZY’s “Break My Heart Myself” and parallels the silent struggles of many young girls battling depression. However, many find it difficult to open up to adults and seek professional help. I hope my piece will bring more awareness to the mental health crisis and help young girls feel seen and heard. The lyrics, especially during the chorus when Rexha sings, “I don’t need anybody else ’cause I can break my heart myself” reminded me of how my friends struggled to seek professional help. This phrase repeated, so I experimented with different isolated movements, inspired by jazz, to reflect the sharpness of the words. I also incorporated leaps and expansive movements to represent how many teens want to escape from their pain. The isolations along with smooth and expansive shapes helped convey the different ranges of emotions that teens may experience during depression.

  • By using the lyrics and different dance styles for guidance, I create pieces that reflect my personal experiences and highlight societal problems that need to be addressed.
