My song, “Words” focuses on someone struggling to express their individuality and someone scared to reach out for help. These stories of individuals in my song are a metaphor for the countless people in the world, who are too afraid to show their voice out of fear of being judged, hurt, ignored, or shamed. They’re too afraid to take a stand for themselves and just try to fit in. They might be too fearful to reach out for help for the same reasons: being disregarded or humiliated. The uplifting chorus “It’s your words” signifies that your voice is a platform to showcase valuable opinions. Showing your voice means having an opinion, vocalizing your thoughts, and being heard. The main message of my song is that we are all on this journey of life together so let’s encourage each other to speak up for ourselves, even though it may be difficult at times.
My artistic process behind the song was first coming up with the stories of the individuals (the verses), and then the chorus. I played my ukulele and figured out some nice chord progressions that would suit the song lyrics and came up with the tune. From there I recorded my song, recorded some harmonies, and used my MIDI keyboard to add some finger snaps in the chorus and some trumpet at the end of the song. It was a fun creative process and I am proud of the message behind the song as well as the music/vocals behind it.

Music, singing/songwriting, has created countless core memories, whether I’m composing alone in my room, singing with my school choir, or performing for communities with my music group. Throughout my life, I have used music as an outlet to express my thoughts, emotions, and dreams. Music is my life.
