What Legacy Means

Samantha W.

  • This poem is a reflection on my personal experience with my grandparents, and my relationship with my heritage and culture. Through the lens of my struggles with learning Mandarin and connecting with my grandparents, the poem explores themes of self-discovery, self-forgiveness, and the power of familial love. My grandparents helped me overcome my insecurities and embrace my heritage. The last stanza of the poem expresses gratitude and appreciation towards my grandparents and their impact on my life. It emphasizes that the culture and traditions that they wanted to share with me are not just a tradition but a legacy of love and family mission. And that the legacy they passed on to me is one that I should let strengthen and uplift me. The poem is written to be emotional, powerful, with a contemplative and reflective tone that evokes a sense of introspection and self-awareness. Through the use of descriptive language, imagery, and rhyme, I intend to transport the reader into my personal experience and make them feel the emotions that I felt as I wrote this.

  • Creativity is a powerful tool for self-growth. Through creating, I discovered my passions and what inspires me. It is a way for me to connect with my roots and cultural heritage, and understand my identity in new ways. It's how I tap into my inner self, what speaks to me, and what motivates me.
