The Fountain

I wrote my flash fiction piece, “The Fountain,” to challenge myself and try capturing feelings of suspense and mystery in a few words. I was inspired by the novel The Secret Garden and the Alnwick Garden in England that only grows poisonous plants. This piece follows a young girl, Adaline, who is staying in an orphanage. She was warned against exploring the grounds but finally found herself unable to ignore the voices that beckon her to break the rules. It was difficult to keep this story short since I found the setting and eerie tone to be perfect setups for rambling imagery. In the end, I think that the length of the piece is one of its strongest qualities. I am happy that I was able to cut it down to its current state, leaving what I think to be the strongest and most creepy details and descriptions.

Writing has been a creative outlet for me for my entire life. It has allowed me to process emotions and reflect on who I am. I love that I can look back at my writing and track how I have changed as a person through the worlds I created and the words that I wrote.
