Panic Room

Sophia W.

  • As a choreographer, I constantly have ideas I want to better explore. Before starting a piece I choose which of these ideas I am going to make the theme of my piece. For this particular piece that theme was solidified after listening to many songs on Spotify. When I found the song Panic Room by Au/Ra, choreography immediately started running through my head, costumes and all. I wanted the lyrics to enhance what my choreography was intended to portray, and this song did just that. After a couple of months and a bit of tinkering I had the choreography that I would teach my dancers. Pulling inspiration from how I thought it would feel to finally give into the panic. After being alone as it slowly builds until you finally break, bracing yourself for the worst possible outcome.

  • Choreography impacts my life by giving me a way to express what I can't formulate in words and share it with others. Choreographing also gives me the freedom to remove myself mentally no matter where I am physically.
