Irreparable

Makena B.

  • My short story was inspired by my mom and some of the experiences she has detailed to me throughout my life about my older sister, the abusive relationship she had with my sister's father, and the struggles she went through with leaving him. I took from that and tried to create a piece that captured all aspects of her experience, from the doubt and confusion of leaving that abusive relationship to the hope and relief of finally being free from it. My goal was to capture both the warmth and cold of the relationship and to portray how those varying feelings were still present even after she left. I then wanted to contrast the relationship with her experience of motherhood and how having a baby made the whole process both an easier and more difficult experience, but ultimately made it all worth it.

  • Writing is my way of understanding the world, allowing me to explore different experiences, viewpoints, and realities than my own and use them to make sense of my own life. The characters and stories that I have created are little pieces of me that carry me through each day.
