Etude Fantasy Ornaments by J. Corigliano

Emma L.

  • Etude Fantasy by John Corigliano is a riveting and contrasting set of 5 etudes. I played the 4th etude, Ornaments, an intense rollercoaster that has elements of trills, glissandos, and even using a method of playing with the palm of your hand at times. The sheer difficulty of the piece was intimidating at first, but I believed in myself and now playing it has never felt more rewarding. The piece includes intense dynamic and tempo changes, always keeping the listener on the edge of their seat. This piece has truly taught me the importance of performing like no one's watching, as a piece as daunting as this, requires no holding back.

  • Having an outlet like piano, where I can express and utilize my creativity, and learn from examples of ways composers and other pianists use their minds, allows me to channel all my energy, imagination and ideas into something I love to do.
