Breathless

Penny C.

  • During my composition of "Breathless", I aimed for it to be a short story. It's much easier to adapt this way, manageable to edit, it's a world captured in a few pages or less. I often write in a different, more poetic style, but this piece is one of the works I'm most proud of. It's inspired by the solemnity of abbeys and catholic churches, their simplicity and darkness. The image of a dropping rosary, a lifeless hand, from someone dearly devoted to their religion. It all fell into place very quickly. I wrote it in one or two sittings, then made small changes later on.

  • Being creative and making a habit of writing helps me feel much more free, it's an outlet for emotions, and gives me something to work towards. It had always been a hobby, creating stories from imagination. But during the pandemic, it really became something I focused on - being a writer.
