Bird Taking Flight

Sofia G.

  • This photo was taken at a park near my house. This photograph is of a small bird starting to fly away from the big fence into the vast sky. This photo came from an assignment where editing should deepen your image and the feeling that comes with it. I always love taking photos of nature over human-made things because to me, there is more of a story to tell when photographing. My mindset here was just to shoot things, buildings, animals that I found interesting. I then saw this bird flying above me and after that, all I could think about was getting an image of this small little bird. There were so many people at the park, adults and kids, and the contrast of this small bird, living in it's home, spoke to me. Luckily, the bird perched upon the fence of the baseball field and I was able to get a closer look. I had photos of the bird sitting upon the fence just sitting there but I kept on shooting, walking around while trying to get different angles. Mid-shooting, a kid ran over and the bird flew away but I kept on going. I didn't know that I had captured the exact moment when the bird started to fly away but afterwards I wanted to emphasize the movement of the bird and the lines of the birds wings and I could do that with a black and white edit. The varying colors of black, white and grey allowed me to show the clear movement of the bird while also keeping the shape of the fence without taking too much attention away from the bird. The shadows of the clouds also help me represent the idea of isolation that is in some way freeing.

  • Art has always been a part of my life since I was little as both of my siblings enjoy painting and drawing, and I kinda fell in love with it as well. Photography is something for myself that hasn't be done yet and and its a way for me to connect and capture my family in different ways.
