An Ode to Ano

My artwork encapsulates my struggle with an eating disorder as I grew up, which stemmed from competitive dance. It was a very painful process to write the villanelle, because it forced me to process the emotions I felt during the prime of my disorder. When deciding the topic of my villanelle, I was at first very against the idea of writing about something so personal to me. However, I knew that many of the kids in my grade struggled with the same lived experience. The reason why I write and enjoy reading poetry is because it makes me feel supported and seen by others. I knew that I had to share my experience, to let others know they were not alone in their battles.

I write poetry based on my lived experiences. The ability to write not only helps me cope with low moments, but also helps spread awareness to others that they are not alone. When I explore poetry, I feel as though I am bonded to a group who offers me support and solutions in times of need.
