After Life

Sathya C.

  • I wrote this story during an opening writing prompt that we do at the beginning of every workshop creative writing class. It was October 13th. We had to choose an opening sentence to write our stories. “I hadn’t meant to kill him” was the starting sentence that inspired me to write about a wandering spirit that had just died. The character has lost his memory, he doesn’t know that he’s dead, and actually thinks he has killed someone. I wrote most of the piece while listening to "Lamp Genso" an album by Lamp a Japanese band. The slow dreamy songs were comforting and peaceful, contrasting with the chaos the character was going through.

  • It's definitely a getaway from the boring day to day life for me. I also feel like I learn a lot from it, and can make a difference with it. When writing, journaling, crocheting, I never feel worried that I'm wasting my time, I feel good if I hyper focus on it for hours even.
