A First Love

My piece, A First Love, depicts the intimate yet far-fetched feeling of a teenager’s first love. After a big introduction, the A theme starts with the strings, showing the deep feelings one feels as a teenager. The complex chord progression and the fact that the melody changes keys within itself show the complexity of the love this person feels. Then the counter-melody uses even more powerful chords to continually show more desperation and power in the love that they feel. The melody then switches to the winds in the new key but is now calmer in notion, which is a feeling aided by the pizzicato in the strings. The harmony is then reharmonized to be a bit simpler and less emotional than the original chord progression, to further this calm feeling. However, when the counter melody comes in after the key change, the desperation and emotion return due to strong chords in the strings. Finally, the desperation ends as we enter the second part of the piece, characterized by two solos. A simple flute solo adds a shimmering feeling and shows the true innocent core of the person’s love. Then a more complex English horn solo enters with a reharmonization in the harmony, adding a more charming feeling. The flute then reenters the spotlight with the English horn as the strings add another layer to the harmony. Then, the piece then modulates from C# minor to its relative major, E major and the third part of the piece goes underway. A beautiful melody characterized by its simple chord progression from the tonic to the minor fourth is played by the winds and strings as the brass and harps accompany this declaration of love. The melody slowly reaches its climax, but then surprisingly the orchestra plays an augmented chord instead of the expected resolve back to the tonic. This is meant to resemble that feeling of anxiety and worries that all teenagers feel about love, which is then quietly resolved with a violin solo quoting the third theme. The piece then finally ends satisfyingly in the key of E major.

Exploring and expressing the creativity I possess impacts my life by making me learn more about who I am as a person. It is surprisingly fulfilling to express my creativity in my pieces since what I make is like a small version of me, allowing me to learn about myself through what I create.
